No, it’s not. While many of our patients are referred from their dentist, we welcome anyone that is seeking orthodontic care.
At what age should I schedule an orthodontic consultation?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every 7-year-old be seen by an orthodontist. By this age, several permanent teeth have erupted allowing us to effectively evaluate the orthodontic condition. At Scenic City Orthodontics we have a fun and interactive kids club called the 7 & Up Club.

What will happen during an orthodontic consultation?
At Scenic City Orthodontics in Dalton, Georgia, you’ll always be greeted with a smile and a warm cookie. Each patient will be checked in with our scheduling coordinator who will give you a tour of our office. You will then meet with one of our Treatment Coordinators, who will take some photos and X-rays to better help Dr. Ryan make a proper diagnosis. Dr. Ryan will then complete a brief, but thorough, exam.
How long will it take to complete orthodontic treatment?
Treatment time is specific for each patient. Generally, treatment time can last anywhere from 8-30 months. The “average” time frame for a person in braces is approximately 18-24 months.
How much do braces cost?
We cannot give an exact cost for treatment until after an exam is completed. That’s simply because the cost ranges due to the patient’s specific needs. Here at Scenic City Orthodontics, we offer a variety of different payment options that our Treatment Coordinator will go over with you during that initial consultation.
How does my insurance work?
Our financial team will review your insurance policy and help to maximize any benefits you may have and file your claims.
How often will I have appointments?
Appointments are scheduled according to each patient’s needs. Most patients in braces will be seen every 8-10 weeks. If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule those accordingly.
Can I schedule all my appointments after school?
Unfortunately, we cannot schedule all appointments for students during after-school hours. However, because most appointments are scheduled 8 weeks apart, patients will miss minimal school. Here at Scenic City Orthodontics in Dalton, Georgia, we do offer before-school appointments to get you in and out before school or work even begins.
Do braces hurt?
Generally, braces do not hurt. After certain visits, your teeth may be sore for a few days. In these situations, pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease any discomfort. Sometimes our patients do not feel any soreness at all – we often remind them, “It doesn’t have to hurt to work!”
Can I still play sports?
Yes, you can still play any sport you wish. We recommend a mouth guard for all sports.
Do I need to see my general dentist while in braces?
Yes! Regular check-ups with your dentist are important while in braces. Your dentist will determine the intervals between cleaning appointments while you are in braces.
Are there certain foods I cannot eat while in braces?
Yes! Once you begin orthodontic treatment there are certain foods you will need to avoid. Our highly-trained clinical assistants will go over this information with you once treatment begins.
How often should I brush my teeth while in braces?
Dr. Ryan and the SCO team recommend that our patients brush their teeth at least 4 times each day – after each meal and before going to bed.
Is it too late to have braces if I am already an adult?
Never! About 25% of our patients are adults. Health, happiness, and self-confidence are important to adults. No patient is “too old” to wear braces!

Teeth, and sometimes entire facial structures, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. It is important that the treatment be appropriate and properly completed.
